Tianshengqiao HVDC Project

South China Electric Power Joint Venture Company

Guangxi and Guangdong provinces, China

The dc system is rated at ±500 kV, 1800 MW with a transmission distance of 960 km. The dc system transmits power from hydroelectric plants at Tianshengqiao on the Nanpan Jiang River in South China and from the Provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou to the load centre of Guangzhou. DC transmission was selected instead of AC because a DC system could ensure a contractual path for the power to Guangzhou.

With an existing parallel 500 kV ac system, system studies were directed at determining the transmission capacity of the combined ac/dc system and investigating interaction between the parallel ac and dc systems.

Special consideration was given to the ground electrode at Tianshengqiao, which is located in an area of high resistivity.

Teshmont provided the following consulting services for the TSQ HVDC
project:

  • Completed system studies, digital simulator studies, and integration studies to establish equipment parameters

  • Prepared turnkey bid documents for the converter stations, including ac substations at each end of the transmission system

  • Evaluated converter equipment bids

  • Reviewed design parameters for the HVDC transmission line

  • Prepared technical specifications to assist in the procurement of the dc line insulators

  • Carried out detailed investigations of the ground electrodes at each end of the system

  • Prepared detailed designs of the ground electrodes

  • Assisted with the commissioning of the HVDC converter stations
