Manitoba Hydro - Dorsey VAR Compensation Project

Manitoba Hydro

North America

At the southern termination of Manitoba Hydro’s Nelson River HVDC transmission system, Dorsey Converter Station inverts the transmitted DC power back to AC. This inversion process consumes a large amount of reactive power or VARs. These VARs were provided by a variety of ac filter banks, capacitor banks and smaller synchronous condensers. Manitoba Hydro decided to increase the available reactive power at Dorsey by adding three large hydrogen cooled synchronous condensers, each rated for +360/-165 MVAr, which are some of the largest units of this type in the world.

Teshmont provided a wide range of services to Manitoba Hydro spanning the life of the 8 year project including:

  • Conducting rating studies.

  • Preparation of equipment specifications for the condenser and auxiliary mechanical systems, isolated phase bus, excitation system, station services as well as unit transformers.

  • Assistance with tender evaluation.

  • Review of contractor design.

  • Design of civil foundations, station services and interface to existing
systems at Dorsey (alarms, remote control etc).

  • Witnessing factory testing of equipment.

  • Construction review inspections.

  • Management of commissioning activities.
