Manitoba Hydro - Brandon Combustion Turbine Project

Manitoba Hydro

Manitoba, Canada

Manitoba Hydro installed two natural gas-fuelled combustion turbine units at its
Brandon Generating Station. The two units added over 250 MW to the station's
capacity, increasing the overall capacity to nearly 360 MW.

Teshmont worked with the Stations Department of Manitoba Hydro on the
modification of the existing 115 kV substation to accommodate the connection of
the two new combustion turbines.

Teshmont established the scope of work with Manitoba Hydro, provided project coordination, attended project review meetings, conducted site visits, and interfaced with other Client departments including the site construction group.

Teshmont provided engineering and drafting services in the following work areas:

  • 115 kV Substation Work:

    • Upgrade overhead copper bus

    • Replace disconnects both manual and motor operated

    • Replace circuit breakers

    • Upgrade risers

    • Select bus and equipment connectors considering copper to aluminium interface

    • Replace suspension and post insulators

    • Add new synchronizing PTs

    • Replace existing CTs

    • Bus interface to new combustion turbines

    • Switch ground mats

  • Station Protection Work:

    • Re-engineer line and station protection

    • Connections and interface for new disconnects

    • Connections and interface for new circuit breakers

    • Connections for synchronizing PTs

    • Change CT ratios

    • Signal and protection interface to new combustion turbines

  • Station Grounding:

    • Design ground grid for new combustion turbine area

    • Design grounding for pipes and equipment associated with new installation

    • Review design of existing substation ground grid
