GEC-Alsthom T&D was awarded a contract by KEPCO to build a 300 MW, 180 kV HVDC link by submarine cable between Haenam and Cheju Island. GEC-Alsthom T&D subcontracted the design of the electrodes to Teshmont.

Electrodes were required at both ends of the link. Each electrode line runs for about 13 km. The two sea electrodes each consist of twenty high silicon iron electrodes suspended in seawater below low tide in a lagoon protected by a rock-fill breakwater.

Teshmont provided the following services:

  • Investigation of sea electrode sites at Haenam and Cheju Island

  • Selection of suitable sites

  • Preparation of conceptual designs of sea electrodes for the HVDC link

  • Studied the effects of the proposed electrodes on submarine cables, water pipelines, power distribution system, fishing, conch and seaweed culture activities

  • Conducted a drawing review of the Haenam and Cheju electrodes, which included a comparison with other sea electrode designs
