Isle of Lewis Wind Farm

AMEC Wind

Isle of Lewis, Scotland

The Isle of Lewis is a remote Scottish island in the North Atlantic that has an abundant supply of wind energy. AMEC Wind investigated the possible harnessing of this energy to augment generation in the British Isles. A massive facility involving the construction of 300 to 600 wind turbines was considered. The proposed project included a submarine cable link up to 600 km in length to connect the wind farm to the UK mainland load centres.

The wind farm would generate 600 MW to 1200 MW of electrical power. The wind farm would also assist the UK Government in achieving their targets for sustainable energy generation.

Teshmont was selected by AMEC Wind to provide engineering assistance with the initial stages of the project. An investigation was carried out to determine the transmission technology that should be used to define possible dc transmission configurations from the wind farm to the load centres.

The services that Teshmont provided included:

  • Evaluation of the state of the art of voltage-sourced converter and extruded cable technology.

  • Review of the requirements of the dc transmission system.

  • Technical comparison of transmission system control and performance for voltage-sourced converters and line-commutated converters by performing preliminary transient studies.

  • Cost estimates of possible transmission configurations using voltage-sourced converters and line-commutated converters.
