Intermountain Power Project

Intermountain Power Agency, U.S.A.

Utah, USA

The 3200 MW Intermountain HVDC Transmission System was planned to transmit power from a coal-fired generating plant in Utah to load centers near Los Angeles, California. The transmission line is approximately 780 km in length. It was subsequently decided to build one bipole with a rating of ±500 kV, 1600 MW, with overload capacity.

Teshmont was retained by the Intermountain Power Agency to carry out detailed systems engineering, to prepare the technical specification and to provide assistance with the tender evaluation. The studies carried out for the transmission system include:

  • Establishing the conceptual system configuration including evaluation of alternative system arrangements and valve group ratings

  • Reliability studies of the dc system

  • Load flow and stability studies for the uprated 4800 MW system

  • DC simulator studies to investigate the dc system performance including power transfer over the dc system during ac system faults and recovery of the dc system following clearing of faults

  • Reactive power requirements of the ac and dc systems

When it was decided to build one bipole with a rating of ±500 kV, 1600 MW, Teshmont assisted with the preparation of the converter specification. Studies included:
  • Provided assistance on modelling of the dc system in stability studies

  • Modification of the dc system

  • Development of ac system equivalents for simulator and ac filter studies

  • Investigation of islanding of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power ac system
