India Power Planning Studies

Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA)

India

Long-range studies are routinely updated to project future system requirements. The CEA determined that a comprehensive national power development program for India was required. With funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Teshmont was selected to assist with this work.

An interconnected network development plan was developed, at which time the total system load was estimated to be about 33,000 MW. The concepts developed from the studies have been used as the basis for the subsequent system upgrades in India.

Teshmont performed a system planning study with the CEA to develop a long-range power plan for India. The study included:

  • Analyzing the long-range electric power requirements for the next 10 year period

  • Evaluating the generating capacity expansion program to meet the demand

  • Planning of a 400 kV transmission network to transmit the power to the load centres and interconnect the existing State Electricity Board power systems

Teshmont also assessed the feasibility of utilizing HVDC for long distance bulk power transmission and back-to-back dc for interregional interconnections.
